It struck me today what a talented bunch of friends I have.
The National Novel Writing Month competition (NaNoWriMo) is held each November with each participant attempting to write a 50,000 word novel in the month. Last time round, 80,000 people started, 13k people finished with over 980 million words in their collective novels. Two friends, Calum and k_sra gave it a go last time out and I’m tempted to try the same this year.
A university friend, Euan, is also a published novelist. I’m impressed and rather humbled by their collective talents. I’m tempted to try in November but, as Euan has already expressed, my first attempt is likely to be drivel, so maybe I should write my first novel now and follow it up with a much better effort in November?
50 thousand words? I struggle to find a 100 to write here.

I’m afraid I didn’t make it to 50,000 last year. I stalled and then got distracted by Christmas and various other manifestations of real life. The intention is to finish it next november, a National Half-Novel Writing Month, if you will. NaHaNoWriMo, which has a nicer rhythm to it, I think.
However, I think that NaNoWriMo (in whatever fractional configuration) is more about quantity than quality. I wouldn’t recommend trying to write something good in a month: William Golding wrote “The Inheritors” in 28 days (for a bet) and it is shockingly shit. If a Nobel Laureate can’t muster quality, why should we mere mortals aspire to it?
Take NaNoWriMo as your first attempt. Then write your masterpiece.

Ooh, ooh! I got a mention. Nor did I this time around, but year before I not only finished, I bought a t-shirt to commemorate and it’s a very nice shirt, btw.
Go for it, jonthegeo. I support you! : )
